The end of the Gatari Amavasaya where usually whole night merry clinging glasses of beer and enjoying spicy non-veg feast , the day ahead we welcome the holy month of SHARAWAN . The month is auspicious since it accompanies many religious festival, Shrawani Somvar and Shaniwar celebration all the month along . The month long pious month even makes a die hard non veg connoisseur to leave that and enjoy the delicacies of sweets and veg. dishes in Shrawan .
The week starts with the Shrawani Somvar where people visit the temples of Shiva and fast for the day . The major enjoyment of Sharwan is the enjoyment of feast after the fast in the evening . the major delicacy is the spicy alu wadi . It is a great bliss to have the home-made aluwadis which make to feast in sharawan a pure enjoyment. Its nature great surprise to us that the same vegetables like alu, moongacha bird, bhendi ,maath ( red leafy vegetable ) taste so nice in this month . The evening delicacy of dinner to eat on a banana leaf is a treat in itself . the enjoyment of having varan -bhat -tup, mughacha birde, alu vadi the combination is fundu out of the world. then the dessert which usually on shrawani somvar is narayandas ladu (rawa ladu) is simply great.
The festival of Nagpanchmi is also celebrated during Shrawan which people do puja of naagdevata. Now,people have stopped feeding milk to the poor snake whole day and using small idols of naag is welcome sign of modernity . But the major part of the nagpanchami is the sweet delicacies it offered. the patoli, is the sweet which is prepared from rice flour, jaggery and coconut which is wrapped in the haldi leaves and steamed which give the fragrance and taste of he leaves is great.Then there are sabudanyacha fenya that crunchy munchy fried stuff which we enjoyed with its crackling noise in the mouth .
No one can forget the festival of Raksha bandhan /Narali purnima The day people prepare various sweets of coconut like naarali wadi, burfi and my favourite naarali bhat. I enjoy it since its very simple dish from coconut , rice , kismis, but usually tastes better and best on this day only.
This is followed by JANMASTHAMI, the birth of Lord Krishna, which is followed by day long fast which is broken at midnight with basundi and puri.
Thus overall the month of shrawan which plays all month along the hide and seek with rains. there is a sudden burst of very heavy rains with lull for next few moments described aptly as "SHRAWANSARI". The green dense cover in the city is a dream come true which this month brings along.
